Embracing the Unknown: Trusting God's Guidance for Our Lives
This verse is filled with an incredible reminder to begin the week. God knows the path He has for us, even when we cannot imagine what lies ahead. Yesterday, in our Sunday school class, we were discussing the life of Moses. As we read through Exodus 3, verse 11 jumped off the page. When God reveals part of His plan to Moses, Moses response is, “Who am I?” Have you ever experienced similar feelings? I have, for sure. I received an email on Friday from the editor of my devotion

When Worship Brings Tears: Trusting God Through the Years
Do you ever get teary in church? On Sunday, at the close of the service, we sang the old song, “As the Deer.” I was gripped with the greatness of God as I realized the words mean as much to me today as they did when I first sang them over 30 years ago. God is always faithful, even in our times of faithlessness. His love does not grow weary. His kindness cannot be exhausted. As a naive teenager, I believed that following Jesus meant my life would go fairly smoothly. But it did

Walking in His Light: A Pre-Easter Testimony
In preparation for Easter Sunday, I read these words of Jesus from the book of John this morning. What a wonderful promise of hope that He is light in this dark world. The day after Easter Sunday, 37 years ago, I placed my faith in Christ as my Savior. While there have been numerous trials and struggles since then, He has always remained faithful and steadfast. The wonderful thing about the Lord is that each trial has served to strengthen my faith in Him and His Word. No matt

No Noodles Needed
I've been camped out in the book of Proverbs since last week seeking God's direction on a couple of choices—specifically regarding my writing and how it intersects with my day job. I keep putting off a decision because I've been waiting to hear back from an agent who requested my full manuscript with a proposal. My mind has been rocking back and forth for the past five weeks waiting to hear either, "Yes, I want to represent you," or "No, it's not right for me." Receiving dire

He Cares
To truly grasp that God, the Author of Life, cares for us should flood our souls with overwhelming joy and peace that can scarcely be contained. Yet, often this isn't the case. So, what's the problem? For me, I easily get consumed with self-importance. Wanting to achieve my goals. Pursue my purpose. Fulfill my dreams. Anytime I shift my focus from the Lord to myself, anxiety begins to take root and robs me of peace. What if I don't fulfill my purpose? What if I don't achiev

The Power of Love
Yesterday morning I was sweeping the walkway in front of my office and was startled when a man started yelling. His obscenity-laden comments were directed at another man who had just walked past me. Against my better judgment, I stayed outside and watched as the irate man waved his hands over his head and continued shouting horrible taunts to the other man. It made my heart sad. Normally my response to a person walking by would be to offer a smile. But there weren't enough sm

God Calls Us to Be Kind
I love the truth of this quote by Aesop, the fable writer many of us read as young children. Kindness is also mentioned as one of the fruits of the Spirit listed by Paul in Galatians 5. In Ephesians 4:32 he also wrote, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." So how can we incorporate kindness into our daily lifestyle? It begins with intentionality. Even the smallest act of kindness has proven to have a ripple effect. Try s

Useful for the Master
Earlier this week I was waiting to get some routine blood work done at the lab in a local hospital. Because Monday had been a holiday, the third floor waiting room was crammed with people. People sitting. People standing. People staring down at their phones. People staring at other people. People grumbling at the protracted wait time. People settling in as if they had no pressing obligations that day. A woman and her husband quickly claimed the two chairs next to me which had

Who Am I?
I am currently studying through the book of Amos in @jennrothschild newest Bible study. This morning's reading had me reflecting on 1 Peter 2:10. It seems as if most of my life, I have struggled with identity in one form or another. As a daughter. As a sister. As a wife. As a mother. As a friend. As a neighbor. As a worker. It saddens me to consider the many times I fell into a pattern of striving just to feel I earned my identity, a place of acceptance. To be fully, truly k

Be Ready, Willing, & Able
When I arrived at work today,, a woman on the street approached me. She showed me a hospital bracelet on her arm, said she was just discharged, and asked if I would be willing to give her $5. She explained that the money was to go towards paying for the 14 prescriptions called in by the hospital physician. I explained that I don't carry cash. She looked in my eyes and said, "I just need my 14 prescriptions. I'm embarrassed to ask people, but everyone tells me the same thing.

The Query Letter
Since receiving my completed manuscript back from my editor, I've been researching and reading about various ways to write a query letter that will pique the interest of an agent. It's dizzying to read through so many different "successful letters" and trying to pen one of my own. I'm a writer so one assumes that it should come easily. But not for me. In fact, I believe there's so much riding on this letter, I compare it to sending my first born to pre-school. Allow me a brie

Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant
Five years ago, I was going through the most painful time in my life. I had literally lost everything including myself. Desperate to get some direction from God about my “what’s next?” questions, I began doing anything a normal middle-aged woman in a crisis would do; drive around aimlessly looking for a place to call home. With scarcely little in the bank and no job in my foreseeable future, I quickly realized the traditional route to home ownership wasn’t in my favor. That’s
